EU REACH Chemical Testing for Headphone Accessories
Testing Overview
Headphone accessories—such as silicone ear tips, TPU ear pads, cable jackets, plastic housings, metal contacts, electroplated decorative parts, PCBs, adhesives, and inks—require REACH testing for export to the EU, including sales on Amazon, cross-border e-commerce platforms, or customs clearance. In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, the standard testing package covers both **Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)** and **restricted substances listed under Annex XVII**.
Headphone accessories must be tested by breaking them down into homogeneous materials; testing the device as a whole is not permitted. For silicone/soft rubber components, the focus is on phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Metal-plated parts that come into prolonged contact with the skin are tested for nickel release. Plastics, inks, adhesives, and coatings are evaluated as individual, distinct units.
Standard Test Items:
1. SVHC Candidate List (screened against the latest version from ECHA)
2. Annex XVII Restricted Substances: Phthalates, cadmium, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), etc.
Additional tests (upon request): Nickel release (for metal parts in contact with skin), azo dyes, and organotin compounds.
Test reports are not interchangeable across components with different materials, formulations, or surface treatments. If the concentration of any individual SVHC exceeds 0.1% by weight, the manufacturer must fulfill supply chain notification requirements and submit a SCIP (Substances of Concern In Products) notification.
Required Documentation and Samples
Please provide a completed test request form, a product Bill of Materials (BOM) specifying the material of each component and whether it comes into contact with the skin, and actual photographs of the product. Please also confirm whether an English-language report is required. Finally, submit a full set of mass-produced accessory samples, including silicone parts, cables, electroplated components, plastic parts, and samples of inks or coatings. Complete Processing Workflow
1. Requirement confirmation: Compile a list of materials used in components, identify parts that come into contact with the skin, and determine the appropriate testing plan (covering SVHC and Annex XVII requirements).
2. Submission of documentation and samples.
3. Sample receipt and verification by the laboratory, followed by the separation of individual homogeneous materials.
4. Instrumental analysis and comparison of results against REACH regulatory limits.
5. Data review and internal laboratory audit.
6. Issuance of a CNAS-accredited REACH test report for compliant samples; for non-compliant samples, provision of corrective action recommendations—requiring the replacement of raw materials or additives, followed by re-testing.

Report Usage and Important Notes
The report is intended for use in EU platform listing reviews, customs inspections, client factory audits, and the maintenance of supply chain technical documentation. Any changes to plastic raw materials, silicone formulations, electroplating processes, or inks and adhesives necessitate the submission of new samples for testing. A REACH report is valid only for the specific samples tested.
Note: REACH and RoHS are two distinct regulatory frameworks. For headphone accessories exported to the EU, it is often necessary to comply with both RoHS and REACH requirements.
