GB 4806 Testing for Metal Components in Contact with Food
Testing Overview
Metal components intended for food contact must comply with the GB 4806.9-2023 standard. This includes items such as fasteners, screws, brackets, mixing attachments, kettle liners, baking tray hardware, and metal parts for food processing equipment, made from materials like stainless steel, aluminum, iron, or tin-plated metal. Any areas featuring coatings, electroplating, or welds require separate evaluation.
Standard Test Items: Sensory requirements; migration of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, chromium, nickel, and antimony. For aluminum products, aluminum migration is also tested. Components with coatings or electroplating must additionally meet the requirements of GB 4806.10. Appropriate food simulants and immersion conditions are selected based on the intended usage scenario (e.g., room temperature, boiling, or baking). Separate test reports are required for different material grades, surface treatments, or plating processes.
Required Documentation and Information
Please provide a test request form, product photographs, specifications for material grades, and details on operating conditions (e.g., exposure to high-temperature boiling or acidic foods). Indicate whether the items undergo electroplating, coating, or welding. Please submit finished, mass-produced samples; for items with coatings or plating, the samples must include the complete contact surface.
Testing Process
1. Requirement confirmation: Identify the base metal, surface treatment, and operating temperature to determine the appropriate migration test protocol.
2. Submission of documentation and samples.
3. Sample receipt and registration by the laboratory; preparation of food simulants for migration/immersion testing in accordance with the standard.
4. Instrumental analysis of migration levels, followed by a comparison against the limits specified in GB 4806.9.
5. Data verification and internal laboratory review.
6. Issuance of a CNAS-accredited GB 4806 test report for compliant products. If a product fails, it must be retested after adjusting the raw materials or surface treatment processes.
The standard turnaround time at Deesev is 5–7 working days; the timeline for retesting will be calculated separately.
Report Usage and Important Notes
Test reports are used for domestic e-commerce product listings, regulatory market surveillance inspections, and client factory audits. Any changes to the base material grade, electroplating, coating, or welding process necessitate the submission of new samples for testing. The test report is valid only for the specific samples submitted for testing.
