Obtaining an EU REACH Test Report for Electroplated Decorative Items

EU REACH Testing for Electroplated Decorative Items

Testing Overview

Electroplated decorative items are typically made from substrates such as zinc alloy, iron, or copper, with surface coatings like nickel, chrome, or zinc plating. Some items may also feature paint, varnish, sealants, or adhesive-bonded components. For exports to the EU, these products must comply with the REACH regulation (EC 1907/2006). Cross-border e-commerce platforms typically require screening for Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC); testing for restricted substances listed under REACH Annex XVII can also be conducted simultaneously.

Key risk areas for electroplated items include the plating layers, passivation films, and sealants. Common hazardous substances include hexavalent chromium, lead, cadmium, nickel compounds, and cobalt. If the items include paint, plastic components, or adhesives, additional screening for organic substances—such as phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs)—is also required.

In accordance with laboratory protocols, samples are broken down into homogeneous materials. The substrate, plating layers, surface varnishes, and plastic components are tested individually; testing the item as a whole is not permitted. For nickel-plated items, a nickel release test can be added upon request.

Available Testing Packages

1. Basic Package: Screening for substances on the ECHA SVHC Candidate List (latest version)—the most common requirement for platforms like Amazon.

2. Enhanced Package: SVHC screening + REACH Annex XVII restricted substances (heavy metals, phthalates, PAHs, etc.).

3. Additional Options: Nickel release, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), etc.

Required Documentation

Please provide a test request form, product photographs, and a Bill of Materials (BOM) specifying the substrate material, the electroplating process, and the presence of any paint, varnish, or plastic components. Please also confirm whether an English-language report is required.

Samples should be taken from mass-produced finished goods. Items with different substrates, electroplating processes, or surface finishes must be submitted as separate samples; a single test report cannot cover multiple variations. Complete Processing Workflow

1. Requirement Confirmation: Identify the base material, coating type, and the presence of any paints or adhesives; select either the "SVHC" or "SVHC + Annex XVII" testing package.

2. Submit documentation and send samples.

3. Laboratory sample registration and breakdown into homogeneous materials (e.g., distinguishing between base materials, electroplated layers, topcoats, and plastic components).

4. Laboratory Testing: Inorganic heavy metals are analyzed via ICP-MS, while organic substances are analyzed using methods such as GC-MS or HPLC.

5. Review of raw data and internal laboratory audit.

6. Issuance of a CNAS-accredited REACH test report (a Declaration of Conformity, or DoC, can also be provided). In the event of a non-compliant result, specific risk areas will be identified; the electroplating process, passivating agents, or paint formulations may then be adjusted, followed by re-testing.

The standard turnaround time at Deesev is 5–7 business days; the timeline for re-testing is calculated separately.

Report Usage and Important Notes

The report is intended for use in the EU market, Amazon platform compliance reviews, customs inspections, and regulatory market surveillance checks.

Samples must be resubmitted if there are any changes to the electroplating process, passivating agents, paint formulations, or the alloy composition of the base material. The report is valid only for the specific samples submitted for testing. If an item is classified as a toy, it must undergo EN71 toy safety testing in addition to REACH testing.
