Food Contact Materials (FCM) refer to materials that come into contact with food under normal or foreseeable conditions of use but do not themselves constitute a part of the food.

GB4806 is China's National Food Safety Standard system for food contact materials and articles. It is specifically designed to regulate the safety of various materials, containers, and utensils that come into contact with food, thereby safeguarding consumer health. While the widespread use of kitchenware, small appliances, and packaging containers brings great convenience to our daily lives, harmful substances within these materials can migrate into food, altering its sensory properties and taste, or even posing serious risks to human health. Therefore, the safety of food contact materials and articles is inextricably linked to food safety; compliant materials protect food from external environmental contamination and ensure that the food's inherent characteristics—such as moisture content, composition, and quality—remain unchanged.

China has just completed the establishment of its new regulatory framework for food-contact materials. The newly released GB 4806.1–11 series of standards specifies both general and specific requirements for food-contact materials and articles made from various substances, including enamel, ceramics, glass, resins, plastics, paper and paperboard, metals, coatings and coating layers, and rubber.

Overall Migration

The total amount of non-volatile substances migrating from food contact materials and articles into the food simulants with which they are in contact; expressed in milligrams of non-volatile migrated substances per kilogram of food simulant (mg/kg) or milligrams of non-volatile migrated substances per square decimeter of contact area (mg/dm²). For food contact materials and articles intended for infants and young children, it is expressed in mg/kg.

Overall Migration Limit (OML)

The maximum permissible amount of non-volatile substances migrating from food contact materials and articles into the food simulants with which they are in contact; expressed in milligrams of non-volatile migrated substances per kilogram of food simulant (mg/kg) or milligrams of non-volatile migrated substances per square decimeter of contact area (mg/dm²).
