German LFGB Standard Test Report for Cake Boards

LFGB Compliance Testing for Cake Liners (Export to Germany)

Testing Overview

Cake liners (such as cupcake liners or baking cups) are paper-based products intended for food contact. For export to Germany, they must undergo testing in accordance with LFGB §§ 30/31 and the BfR Recommendation XXXVI/2 for baking papers, ensuring suitability for high-temperature oven use. Products featuring printing or grease-resistant coatings are subject to stricter oversight, with the inks and coatings serving as key testing components.

Standard Test Package:

1. Sensory Analysis (odor and taste; per DIN 10955—a mandatory LFGB requirement; no transfer of off-odors or off-tastes to the cake is permitted).

2. Heavy metals (e.g., lead, cadmium).

3. Fluorescent whitening agents.

4. Primary aromatic amines (PAAs) — a critical focus for printed products.

5. Formaldehyde.

6. Mineral oils (MOAH/MOSH) — a frequently regulated parameter for baking papers.

7. Acrylamide release (per the latest BfR requirements).

8. High-temperature migration testing (using dough or MPPO simulants to replicate actual baking conditions).

Additional tests can be included upon request, such as those for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) or PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). If the product is a composite (e.g., plastic or silicone-coated paper), additional migration testing for the plastic component will be required.

Required Documentation and Samples

You will need to provide a completed test request form, product photographs, material specifications, details on whether the product features printing or grease-resistant coatings, and usage conditions (baking temperature and duration per use). Please also specify if an English-language report is required. Samples must be finished, mass-produced items, including all printed surfaces and coatings. Different materials and different ink designs/patterns must be evaluated separately. Complete Processing Workflow

1. Requirement Confirmation: Define the material of the cake liner, printing specifications, grease-resistance treatment, and baking temperature to determine the appropriate BfR XXXVI/2 testing protocol.

2. Submit documentation and send samples.

3. Laboratory receives and registers samples, categorizing them by base material, ink, and coating components.

4. Conduct sensory evaluation, sample preparation, chemical analysis, and high-temperature migration simulation.

5. Review raw data and perform internal quality audits.

6. For compliant samples, issue an LFGB test report (CNAS-accredited). For non-compliant samples, identify risk areas; re-testing is possible after replacing the paper, ink, or coating materials.

Deesev’s standard turnaround time is 5–7 business days; the timeline for re-testing will be calculated separately.

Report Usage and Important Notes

The report is required for products sold on the German market, for audits by cross-border e-commerce platforms (such as Amazon), and for inspections by German customs or market regulatory authorities. There is no official "LFGB certificate"; what is commonly referred to in the industry as "LFGB certification" is, in fact, an LFGB+BfR test report.

Cake liners are classified as single-use baking paper. If the base paper supplier, ink formulation, or grease-resistant coating process is changed, new samples must be submitted for testing. A single test report cannot be shared across different printing designs if the inks used are different, even if the base paper is the same. The report is valid only for the specific samples submitted.
