The process for obtaining a Certificate of Analysis (COA) report is not complicated. The core is to find a qualified and reliable agency, send samples as required, and fill out the application form.
I. Six Steps to the Process
1. Clarify Needs and Choose the Right Agency
First, clarify your testing purpose (e.g., product quality control, export customs clearance, e-commerce platform requirements, etc.) and target market (domestic or overseas). This determines the report's standards and qualification requirements.
Then, choose an agency. This step is crucial. Look for two qualifications:
- CMA (China Metrology Accreditation): A domestic standard; the report has legal validity and is mandatory.
- CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment): Internationally recognized; usually required for product export (DEZEW Testing CNAS registration number: L8083).
2. Communicate Needs and Complete the Application Form
Contact the selected institution and submit the "Testing Application Form," along with necessary product information such as:
- Ingredient list, product instructions
- Product implementation standards (National Standard GB, Enterprise Standard, etc.)
- Other special testing requirements
3. Send Samples
Send representative samples according to the quantity, condition, and packaging required by the institution. Please note:
- Sample quantity: Usually three times the quantity required for a full inspection; one copy for testing, one for verification, and one for record keeping.
- Sample condition: Packaging intact, labels clear (including sample name, batch number, manufacturer, etc.).
- Validity period: The remaining validity period of the samples should generally cover two testing cycles.
4. Contract Signing and Payment
The institution will assess and quote based on your needs. After confirmation, a contract will be signed and the testing fee will be paid.
5. Laboratory Testing
Once the institution receives the samples and payment, it will initiate the case. Engineers will use professional analytical techniques (such as chromatography, spectral analysis, etc.) to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of the samples.
6. Obtaining the Report
After the testing is completed and verified, the agency will issue an official report. You can choose to have a hard copy mailed to you or download an electronic version, depending on your needs.
II. Key Considerations
- Clarify the report's purpose: Is it for R&D, quality control, export, or to meet platform audit requirements (such as Amazon)? The choice of agency and the testing items will differ depending on the purpose.
- Prefer local, qualified agencies: This allows for convenient face-to-face communication of needs and confirmation of procedures, saving a lot of trouble, especially when handling complex projects.
- Always verify the agency's qualifications (CMA/CNAS): This is the fundamental guarantee of the report's credibility. Before placing an order, be sure to ask the agency to show its qualification certificate or check its validity on the government website.
III. Testing Time and Cost
- Time: Standard projects can usually be completed within 5-7 business days. If you are in a hurry, you can inquire about expedited services, but this usually requires an additional fee.
- Cost: There is no uniform standard. The cost depends entirely on the complexity of the test, the number of items, and the required qualifications (CMA/CNAS). A simple single-component content determination might cost a few hundred yuan, while a complex full-component analysis could cost thousands. The most accurate way is to inquire directly with the testing institution.
