Guide to Obtaining a German LFGB Testing Report for Aluminum Food Containers

Aluminum food containers (disposable aluminum foil containers, food storage containers, baking containers, etc.) exported to Germany must comply with LFGB regulations, focusing on three main dimensions: coating safety, heavy metal migration, and surface sensory characteristics. The following are the key points for obtaining a report.

I. Core Testing Items

1. Sensory Testing: Whether there is a metallic taste, off-odor, or color transfer after contact with simulated food liquid.

2. Heavy Metal Migration (Critical):

Aluminum (Al) Migration Limits: Generally ≤ 5 mg/kg food or ≤ 1 mg/dm² contact area

Lead, Cadmium, Chromium, Nickel, etc.: Strict EU limits, must comply with EU 1935/2004 Specific Migration Limits (SML)

3. Coating Migration Test (if there is an inner coating):

Total Migration (OML ≤ 10 mg/dm²)

Specific Migrations: Bisphenol A, Formaldehyde, Aromatic Amines, Primary Aromatic Amines (PAA) ≤ 0.01 mg/kg

4. Specific Element Release:

Element migration from aluminum alloy components (e.g., Al-Mg-Si)

5. Color Fastness and Temperature Resistance Tests:

Whether the coating blisters, peels off, or precipitates at high temperatures (above 200℃)

6. Microbiological Testing (required for some food-grade applications).

II. Processing Procedure (5 Steps)

1. Product and Material Confirmation

Aluminum grade (e.g., 3003, 8011), thickness, whether coated/anodized

Confirm usage scenario: baking (>200℃), refrigeration, room temperature; food contact type (acidic/oily/neutral)

Prepare LFGB/food-grade declaration from raw material supplier

2. Laboratory Selection

Preferably a DAkkS-accredited German laboratory (DEZEW Testing CNAS registration number: L8083)

Reports issued by domestic laboratories must clearly state whether they are accepted by German customs/buyers.

3. Sample Submission Requirements

Complete finished food containers: 5-10 pieces (depending on size)

Raw material aluminum sheet/coating sample: 100-200g

Accessories (e.g., silicone sealing rings, plastic caps): require separate testing or overall evaluation.

4. Testing and Report Issuance

Report Language: German + English bilingual recommended to avoid German customs scrutiny.

5. Subsequent Compliance Actions

The report serves as proof for customs clearance, shelf placement, and bidding.

Packaging labeling: "For food contact," maximum temperature resistance, manufacturer/importer information.

It is recommended to prepare a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and a Declaration of Conformity Letter simultaneously.

III. List of Required Documents

Aluminum food container samples (finished product + raw materials)

Bill of Materials (BOM): Aluminum grade, coating type (e.g., PTFE, polyester, silicone)

Supplier qualifications and raw material LFGB/compliance declaration

Process description (stamping, cleaning, coating curing temperature)

Company qualifications (business license, trademark, etc.)

IV. Timeframe and Cost Reference

| Test Type | Timeframe

| Basic LFGB (bare aluminum/uncoated)

| Coated aluminum food container | 12-18 working days

| Composite material (aluminum + plastic lid + silicone ring)

| High-end customization (multiple food simulation liquids + multiple temperatures)

Timeframe: 5-7 working days

Influencing factors: Coating type, accessory material, type of simulation liquid, whether it contains infant food grade requirements.
