Reporting Process for Wooden Tableware under China GB4806
I. Applicable Standard
Wooden tableware belongs to the category of bamboo and wood materials and products for food contact, and the applicable standard is GB4806.12-2022, "National Food Safety Standard - Bamboo and Wood Materials and Products for Food Contact." This standard was published on June 30, 2022, and officially implemented on June 30, 2023, replacing the previous version GB4806.12-2016.
II. Application Process (5 steps)
1. Confirm Product Scope and Testing Items
For wooden tableware, specific testing items need to be confirmed, mainly including:
Sensory indicators: soaking solution, color after soaking, off-odor, etc.
Total migration: distilled water, 4% acetic acid, 95% ethanol, etc.
Potassium permanganate consumption
Heavy metals (as Pb): arsenic, cadmium, lead, etc.
Formaldehyde migration
Pentachlorophenol (PCP): Not detectable (detection limit 0.01 mg/kg)
Thiabendazole (TBZ): Not detectable
Optophenylphenol (OPP)
Antibacterial components: If involved, testing is required.
Fluorescent whitening agents (if made of recycled fiber, testing is required)
2. Select a Testing Institution
A laboratory with the following qualifications needs to be selected:
CMA (China Metrology Accreditation) accreditation
CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment) accreditation
Testing capabilities must cover all items of GB4806.12 standard
3. Submit Samples and Documents
Required sample quantity: Typically, 3-5 complete samples are required.
Required Documents:
Business License (copy)
Product Specification Sheet or Instruction Manual
Material Formula Information
Production Process Flow
Sample List and Corresponding Material Descriptions
Testing Application Form (provided by the testing institution)
4. Laboratory Testing
The testing cycle is generally 5-7 working days.
Expedited processing can be negotiated with the testing institution.
The testing process includes sample pretreatment, simulated liquid immersion, and analytical testing.
5. Obtaining the Test Report
A GB4806 test report will be issued after the test is passed.
The report includes the test items, test methods, test results, and judgment conclusions.
The report can be used for product labeling, compliance certification, market entry registration, etc.
III. Processing Time and Fee Reference
| Item | Reference Time | Description
| Testing Cycle | 5-7 working days | Depends on the number of samples and test items
| Total Fee | 800-2000 RMB | The testing requirements are determined based on material complexity and the specific testing items.
IV. Precautions
The new version of GB4806.12-2022 has added some testing items and stricter limit requirements compared to the old version. Please ensure that you are complying with the latest version of the standard.
Wooden tableware materials vary considerably (e.g., solid wood, plywood, coated paint, etc.), and the testing items may differ depending on the material.
The report is usually valid for one year. Retesting is required if there are changes in raw materials, production processes, or suppliers.
It is recommended to retain raw material purchase vouchers and test reports for inspection by regulatory authorities.
