PU messenger bag EU REACH regulation testing process

Date:2025-08-27 09:46:56 Classification :【question】 Visits:
The REACH regulatory testing process and key points for PU messenger bags exported to the EU are compiled from EU compliance requirements and third-party testing agency operating guidelines:

I. Preliminary Preparation

1. Material List

- List all components, including PU fabric, lining, metal hardware (zippers/fasteners), ink, adhesives, etc., in detail, and clearly identify supplier information.

2. Selecting a Certification Body

- Prioritize EU-accredited laboratories (DTI) to confirm their REACH-SVHC testing capabilities.

II. Submission and Testing Process

1. Sample Requirements

- Provide 2-3 samples of the complete finished product and disassembled materials (e.g., separate PU fabric and metal components) to ensure coverage of all materials.

2. Core Testing Items

| Test Category | Specific Items

| Chemical Substance Testing | - SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern): 205 items tested (as of August 2025), such as phthalates (limit 0.1%) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

- Heavy Metals: Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium (focused on leather and metal accessories)

| Physical Properties Testing | - Abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and tear resistance (simulating daily wear and tear)

- Nickel release from metal accessories (skin contact parts)

3. Special Requirements

- PU materials require additional attention to residual organic solvents (such as DMF dimethyl fumarate) and odor testing.

III. Reporting and Compliance Management

1. Testing Cycle and Reporting

- The standard process takes 5-7 business days (expedited processing can be reduced to 3 days). The laboratory will issue a REACH compliance report in both Chinese and English.

2. Result Handling

- If SVHC concentrations exceeding 0.1% are detected:

- Notification to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is required (mandatory for annual export volumes > 1 ton);

- Adjust the supply chain or replace materials before resubmitting for testing.

IV. Cost and Time Optimization Suggestions

- Cost Control: Fees are based on material type (PU main material + auxiliary materials). Basic testing costs are approximately ¥1,500-3,000.

- Dynamic Tracking: The SVHC list is updated semi-annually. Regular screening for new materials is recommended (e.g., by subscribing to the ECHA official website).

Notes

⚠️ Labeling and Traceability: Finished products must be affixed with the REACH compliance label, and test reports and supply chain material certification must be retained for reference.

⚠️ Responsible Party: Non-EU companies must complete registration through an Only Representative (OR) to avoid trade risks.
