Plastic Particles China GB4806.7-2023 Testing Process, GB4806.7-2023 is a Chinese national standard for testing requirements for plastic materials and products for food contact. The standard was released in September 2023 and will be implemented on September 6, 2024. For the testing of plastic particles, the following process needs to be followed:
I. Scope of application of the standard
GB4806.7-2023 applies to plastic materials and products for food contact, including but not limited to:
- Resins, resin blends
- Plastic materials (various plastic particles, slices, masterbatches, sheets)
- Plastic products
- Unvulcanized thermoplastic elastomer materials and products
- Starch-based plastic materials and products for food contact
II. Testing items
According to GB4806.7-2023, the testing items for plastic particles mainly include:
- Total migration: For starch-based plastics with a starch content of ≥40%, if the total migration exceeds the limit, add a chloroform extraction step.
- Potassium permanganate consumption: starch-based plastics with starch content ≥40% do not need to be tested.
- Heavy metals (measured in Pb): consistent with the old standard of 2016.
- Migration of aromatic primary amines: a new item, the total amount of migration shall not be detected (detection limit 0.01mg/kg).
- Specific migration and residues: check the appendix list of the new standard.
III. Test process
3.1 Sample preparation
- Sample collection: randomly select samples from the production batch to ensure that the samples are representative.
- Sample processing: according to the requirements of the test items, the samples are pre-treated as necessary, such as crushing, dissolving, etc.
3.2 Test method
- Total migration: use simulants to carry out migration tests and determine the total amount of substances migrated.
- Potassium permanganate consumption: use potassium permanganate solution to react and determine the consumption.
- Heavy metals: Determine the heavy metal content using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).
- Migration of aromatic primary amines: Determine the migration of aromatic primary amines using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
- Specific migration and residue: Select the appropriate test method according to the requirements in the appendix list.
3.3 Data analysis
- Data recording: Record the test data of each test item in detail.
- Result determination: Determine whether the test results meet the requirements according to the standard limit of GB4806.7-2023.
3.4 Report preparation
- Report content: Including sample information, test items, test methods, test results, judgment conclusions, etc.
- Report review: The technical person in charge of the testing agency reviews the report content to ensure that the data is accurate.
- Report issuance: After the review is passed, the testing agency will issue a formal test report.
IV. Precautions
- Sample representativeness: Ensure that the collected samples are representative and can reflect the quality status of the entire production batch.
- Selection of testing methods: Select appropriate testing methods according to the specific requirements of the test items to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results.
- Data recording and management: Record the test data of each test item in detail and keep them properly for subsequent review and audit.
