German LFGB Certification Report for Food-Grade Silicone Sealing Rings

Date:2026-10-13 09:42:51 Classification :【question】 Visits:
Food-grade silicone sealing rings fall under the scope of German LFGB regulations for food-contact products; compliance involves specific testing requirements, application procedures, and key considerations to avoid common pitfalls.

I. Core Testing Requirements

Silicone sealing rings must comply with the German BfR XV standard for silicone products, which imposes some of the strictest testing requirements among all food-contact categories:

1. Mandatory Sensory Evaluation (Pass/Fail Criterion): In accordance with the DIN 10955 standard, the sealing ring must not release any off-odors or exhibit taste transfer or discoloration after prolonged immersion in food simulants at 40°C; even a slight rubbery odor results in immediate failure.

2. Volatile Organic Matter (VOM) Test: The limit for total volatile organic matter is ≤0.5%. Peroxide-cured silicone requires additional testing for peroxide residues, whereas low-odor platinum-cured silicone typically has a higher pass rate for this parameter.

3. Overall Migration Test: Testing simulates various food-contact scenarios (e.g., water, acidic media, fatty foods), with a total migration limit of ≤10 mg/dm². Sealing rings intended for high-temperature use require additional high-temperature immersion migration testing.

4. Heavy Metals and Specific Hazardous Substances Test: Tests for the leaching of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium, alongside controls for toxic substances like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organotin compounds.

5. Additional Testing for Colored Sealing Rings: Must pass a color migration test to ensure that pigments do not leach and contaminate food.

II. Application Documentation and Sample Requirements

1. Basic Documentation

Complete the LFGB testing application form provided by the laboratory. Information regarding operating temperature, contact media, dishwasher safety, and intended use (single vs. repeated use) must be accurate; errors in this information will invalidate the test report.

Provide the silicone raw material grade, curing system (platinum or peroxide), and a complete list of pigments and additives.

Submit actual product photos and instructions for use. For German customs clearance and Amazon listings, additional details regarding the German importer—including name, address, and contact information—are required. 2. Sample Submission Requirements

Provide 3–6 finished sealing rings that are identical to the mass-produced batch; SKUs with different colors or formulations must be submitted separately.

Note: Only SKUs sharing identical silicone raw materials, vulcanization systems, colorant formulations, and colors may share a single test report; any change to these parameters requires re-testing.

III. Complete Process

1. Submit all product and company information; a laboratory with CMA and CNAS accreditation (e.g., Dezewei Testing, CNAS Reg. No. L8083) will evaluate the testing scope and confirm the quotation.

2. Sign and return the service agreement, make the payment, and ship samples to the laboratory.

3. The laboratory conducts comprehensive testing in accordance with LFGB §§ 30–31 and the BfR XV standard for silicone.

4. Upon passing all tests, the laboratory issues an English LFGB test report; a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) regarding EU Regulation 1935/2004 can also be provided.

5. The standard turnaround time is 3–5 working days. Once passed, the report remains valid indefinitely, provided there are no changes to the formulation, raw materials, or vulcanization process.

IV. Key Tips to Avoid Common Pitfalls

1. Prioritize laboratories capable of issuing DAkkS-accredited reports (e.g., Dezewei Testing, CNAS Reg. No. L8083). German customs does not recognize reports lacking the DIN 10955 sensory test, which can lead to immediate cargo seizure.

2. Do not submit "prototype" samples that differ from the mass-production formulation. If German market surveillance authorities discover discrepancies during subsequent spot checks of bulk shipments, they may mandate a recall of the entire batch.

3. The report allows for the application of the compliant German "Knife and Fork" symbol (minimum height of 5mm), which significantly boosts trust among local German consumers.
