EU ROHS testing procedures for refrigerators

Date:2025-08-19 11:28:03 Classification :【question】 Visits:
According to the EU RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU and its amending Directive (EU) 2015/863), refrigerators, as large household appliances, must pass hazardous substance testing before entering the EU market. The following is the specific application process and precautions:

I. RoHS Core Requirements

1. Testing Items (10 restricted substances):

| Substance Name | Limit Requirements

| Lead (Pb) | ≤0.1%

| Cadmium (Cd) | ≤0.01%

| Mercury (Hg) | ≤0.1%

| Hexavalent Chromium (Cr⁶⁺) | ≤0.1%

| Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs) | ≤0.1%

| Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) | ≤0.1%

| Diisobutyl Phthalate (DIBP) | ≤0.1%

| 2-Ethylhexyl Phthalate (DEHP) | ≤0.1%

| Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) | ≤0.1%

| Benzyl Butyl Phthalate (BBP) | ≤0.1%

Note: Four new phthalates will be mandatory starting July 22, 2019.

2. Scope of Application:

Refrigerator units and their components (housing, circuit boards, plastic components, insulation materials, etc.) must be tested, covering the entire production chain.

II. Application Process (5-7 business days)

1. Application Submission

- Complete the application form provided by the testing agency and provide the product's bill of materials (BOM) and technical documents (circuit diagram/manual).

- Specify the sample type (whole unit or component) and classify the sample by material (metal/non-metal).

2. Sample Delivery

- Send 2-3 whole units. Components should be tested by weight (e.g., 10-20g for plastic parts).

- Highly highlight components that are likely to contain harmful substances (e.g., lead in solder joints and plasticizers in plastics).

3. Laboratory Testing

- The laboratory will conduct chemical analysis in accordance with IEC 62321:2012, using XRF screening or wet chemistry for precise quantification.

- If the materials are complex, a complete device test or integrated report may be selected (RoHS compliance certification for all components must be provided for the integrated report).

4. Report Review and Issuance

- Engineers will prepare the test report and conduct an internal review for data consistency.

- Upon successful review, a RoHS compliance report in both Chinese and English will be issued (valid for one year by default, subject to change due to raw material batches).

III. Required Documents List

| Document Type | Requirements

| Product Application Form | Laboratory-provided template, indicating product model/purpose

| Bill of Materials (BOM) | List of all components and materials

| Schematic/PCB Diagram | Marking of locations of metal components

| Product Manual | Technical specifications and usage scenarios

| Representative samples | Packaging and labeling by material

IV. Notes

1. Laboratory Selection: Prioritize laboratories with CNAS/CMA accreditation (such as Shenzhen Dezewei Testing).

2. Cost Control:

- Whole-unit testing costs more than a consolidated report, but the data is more reliable.

- Pre-screening for high-risk materials (such as PVC plastic and lead-containing solder) can reduce retesting costs.

3. Extended Requirements: Refrigerators exported to the EU must also comply with CE certification (including EMC/LVD directives).
