GB4806 is China's national food safety standard system for food contact materials and products. It is specifically designed to regulate the safety of various materials, containers, and tools that come into contact with food, ensuring consumer health.
I. Applicable Standards and Scope
Glass containers must comply with GB4806.5-2016 "National Food Safety Standard - Glass Products," which officially came into effect on April 19, 2017, replacing the relevant requirements for food-containing glass products in GB19778-2005. Its scope includes all glass containers that come into contact with food:
Food Packaging: Wine bottles, food jars, condiment bottles, etc.
Storage: Food storage containers, storage bottles, etc.
Tableware: Glass cups, glass bowls, glass plates, etc.
II. Core Testing Items and Limits
1. Sensory Requirements: The glass container surface should be smooth, free of cracks, bubbles, stones, and other defects, odorless, and should not affect the color, aroma, or taste of food when in contact with it.
2. Heavy Metal Migration Detection:
Lead (Pb) migration ≤ 0.8 mg/L (immersion test in 4% acetic acid simulated solution)
Cadmium (Cd) migration ≤ 0.3 mg/L (immersion test in 4% acetic acid simulated solution)
Heavy Metal Leaching from Cup Edge: Additional heavy metal migration testing is performed on the contact area between the cup rim and the container.
3. Physical Performance Testing:
Appearance Quality: Inspect for defects such as cracks, bubbles, and stones.
Dimensional Deviation: Measure length, width, and thickness to ensure they meet specifications.
Heat Resistance: Test stability under high-temperature environments to prevent breakage during use.
4. Migration and Chemical Stability Testing:
Acidic Condition Migration Test: Simulates substance migration when in contact with acidic foods.
High-Temperature Condition Migration Test: Simulates migration under sterilization and heating conditions.
Long-Term Storage Migration Test: Simulates substance migration during long-term food storage.
Chemical Stability: Ensures no chemical reaction or release of harmful substances occurs when in contact with acids, alkalis, alcohol, etc., in food.
III. Testing Procedure and Sample Requirements
1. Testing Procedure:
Provide sufficient test samples and application forms, etc.
Express samples and application forms to a third-party testing organization.
The laboratory will provide a quote based on the samples and testing items.
After payment, the laboratory will arrange testing.
Upon completion of testing, an electronic test report will be sent. A paper report can be requested upon request.
2. Sample Requirements: Two complete samples of glass containers are required. For special specifications, please consult the staff of the corresponding testing organization.
IV. Key Compliance Requirements for Reports
Raw Material Compliance: Raw materials used in glass production, such as silica sand (SiO₂≥99%), limestone (CaCO₃≥95%), and soda ash, must meet purity requirements. Additives must be controlled within safe limits.
Production Process: The production environment and equipment must meet hygiene standards. Product surfaces must be smooth and free of defects to avoid risks such as scratches and cracks.
Labeling Requirements: Products must be labeled with information such as the manufacturer, production date, and suitable usage conditions (e.g., whether microwaveable, heat-resistant temperature).
Corporate responsibility: Manufacturing enterprises must establish a quality management system, make self-declarations on product compliance, and retain test reports for regulatory spot checks.
