Guide to Obtaining German LFGB Certification Report for Wine Accessories

Wine accessories (stemmed glasses, decanters, wine jugs, corks, corkscrews, decanter metal bases, ice stones, etc.) come into prolonged contact with alcoholic beverages, and German consumers have extremely high food safety standards for wine accessories. Therefore, exporting to Germany requires LFGB certification. The following is the complete application process.

I. Pre-application Confirmation

Core Regulation: German LFGB §30/§31/§35 (Food Contact Clauses of the Food, Commodities and Feed Act)

Supporting Standards: EU 1935/2004, EN 1388 series (Metal/Glass/Ceramic Migration Testing)

Certification Nature: Mandatory, not voluntary product certification; a Declaration of Conformity (DOC) is issued by the manufacturer after passing the test.

Even using the same EU food-grade report, German customs and retailers may still only accept LFGB test reports.

II. Common Material Classifications and Key Testing Items for Wine Glasses

1. Glassware (stemmed glasses, decanters)

Key Testing: Lead and cadmium leaching (microwave oven/oven operation), sensory testing, bubble clarity

2. Metalware (cork openers, ice stones, stainless steel wine jugs)

Key Testing: Migration of specific metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, cobalt, and arsenic (EN 1388-1)

3. Ceramicware (earthenware jars, wine vessels)

Key Testing: Lead and cadmium leaching (immersion in 4% acetic acid, extremely strict limits)

4. Corks and Seals (cork stoppers, silicone stoppers, metal bottle caps)

Key Testing: Sensory testing, nitrosamines (rubber-based), plasticizers, volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

5. Woodenware (oak barrel chips, wine racks)

Key Testing: Formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol (PCP), preservative migration

III. Application Process

Step 1: Prepare Materials

Products BOM (Bill of Materials)

Supplier Information for Each Component

Coating, Ink, and Electroplating Process Descriptions

Step 2: Selecting a Laboratory

It is recommended to choose an institution with the following qualifications:

ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation

Domestic Recommendation: Dezewei Testing CNAS Registration No.: L8083

Step 3: Sample Testing

Sample Requirements: 3–5 finished products; disassemble and test components separately if necessary.

Simulated Conditions: Typically uses a 4% acetic acid solution to simulate wine immersion, 24h/40°C or higher.

Testing Cycle: 5–7 working days normally.

Step 4: Report and DOC

The report should include: Product Model, Test Items, Limits, Test Methods, and Conclusion Judgment.

The manufacturer issues a Declaration of Conformity (DOC) based on the report, attached to the product technical documentation.

Technical documentation retention period ≥ 10 years, for random checks by German customs and supervisory agencies.

IV. Cost Reference

| Product Type | Cost Range (RMB)

| Single Glass Stem Glass | 800 – 3000 RMB

V. Common Pitfalls to Avoid

1. High Risk of Lead in Crystal Glass: High-lead crystal wine glasses often have excessive lead leaching levels. It is recommended to use "lead-free crystal" or "barium crystal."

2. Colored Coated Glassware: Painted or gilded parts of wine glasses require additional testing for extractable metals such as cadmium, lead, and cobalt.

3. Decanter Base Metal Components: Stainless steel is prone to excessive migration of chromium, nickel, and manganese. It is recommended to prioritize 304/316 food-grade steel.

4. Cork Corks: Imported corks may contain pentachlorophenol (PCP). Obtain a chemical treatment declaration from the supplier.

5. DOC is More Important Than Reports: German customs pays more attention to the completeness of the manufacturer's declaration of conformity. A report without a DOC may still result in rejection.

If you can provide specific information about the material, style, and accessories (set/single item) of the wine accessories, I can provide a more accurate list of testing items and a customized solution.
