Which products require MSDS testing?

Date:2026-03-19 11:25:03 Classification :【question】 Visits:
MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), now more commonly known internationally as SDS, is a technical document used by chemical manufacturers and importers to clarify the physical and chemical properties, toxicity, environmental impact, and potential health hazards of chemicals to users.

Simply put, any product containing chemical substances that poses potential risks during transportation, storage, or use, or is subject to import and export regulatory restrictions, must provide MSDS/SDS reports.

1、 Pure chemicals and raw materials

This is the category that requires MSDS most clearly:

1. Hazardous chemicals: flammable liquids (such as alcohol, solvents), explosives, oxidants, toxic substances (such as pesticide raw materials), corrosive substances (such as strong acids and bases).

2. Industrial raw materials: various chemical raw materials, intermediates, catalysts, additives, electroplating solutions, cleaning agents, etc.

2、 Mixtures and preparations

Products made from a mixture of multiple chemical substances, due to their complex composition, usually require MSDS preparation through testing or evaluation:

1. Adhesives and sealants: glue, strong glue, silicone sealant, instant glue (usually containing organic solvents).

2. Coatings and inks: paints, diluents, curing agents, inks, thinner (usually containing volatile organic compounds VOC).

3. Cleaning supplies: industrial cleaning agents, rust removers, bleach, disinfectants, and industrial grade detergents.

4. Lubricating oil and rust inhibitor: cutting fluid, rust inhibitor oil, lubricating oil additives.

3、 Consumer chemicals

For products used in daily life that contain controlled ingredients or are hazardous, customs and logistics companies usually require MSDS for export:

1. Aerosol: insecticide, hair gel, air freshener, spray paint (usually containing flammable gas propellant).

2. Car care products: car wax, glass water, antifreeze.

3. Household chemicals: nail polish, nail washing water, lighter oil, essential oil.

4、 Special items

These items, although not liquid chemicals, contain hazardous substances or have potential risks inside:

1. Lithium batteries and products containing lithium batteries:

Lithium metal batteries/lithium-ion batteries: This is one of the categories with the highest demand for MSDS. Whether it is a power bank, mobile phone battery, or button battery, MSDS (usually requiring UN38.3 test report) must be provided during air and sea transportation.

Equipment containing lithium batteries, such as electric toys, Bluetooth speakers, power tools, etc., may require MSDS for the entire machine or MSDS for the battery part during transportation.

2. Magnet: Strong neodymium iron boron magnet (if the magnetic field is too strong, it may be transported as dangerous goods and requires MSDS evaluation).

3. Fire extinguisher: It contains compressed gas and chemical powder inside.

4. Fuel cells/fuels: such as lighters, camping gas canisters.

5、 Cosmetics and pesticides

1. Cosmetics: Although MSDS (requiring CPSR or filing) is usually not required for finished product retail, suppliers must provide MSDS when purchasing raw materials or transporting semi-finished products in large barrels.

2. Pesticides: finished products and raw materials such as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.

6、 When is it necessary to do MSDS?

If you encounter the following situations, you usually need to provide MSDS:

1. Export customs declaration/clearance: Many countries require MSDS for chemicals and dangerous goods.

2. International logistics transportation: Especially for air freight (IATA DGR) and sea freight (IMDG Code), logistics companies will require MSDS to determine whether the goods are general cargo or dangerous goods.

3. Customer requirements: Downstream buyers (especially European and American customers) will force suppliers to provide in order to comply with local occupational safety and health regulations (such as EU REACH, US OSHA).

4. Safety supervision/environmental inspection: Enterprises need to file with the safety supervision department when storing hazardous chemicals.

Summary and Recommendations

If it is pure chemicals/dangerous goods: must be done.

If it is a battery/charged product: must be done.

If it is a regular product (such as plastic toys, stainless steel tableware): MSDS is usually not required (unless it contains batteries or hazardous liquids).

Attention: MSDS is not a simple "test certificate", it is a technical manual. Preparing MSDS does not require conducting a complete set of tests every time. If the enterprise has accurate ingredient formula data, it can directly prepare it; If the ingredients are unknown or need to be verified, samples need to be sent to the laboratory for testing before preparation.
