Stainless steel tableware French DGCCRF food contact material testing

Date:2025-07-28 09:39:51 Classification :【question】 Visits:358
The core requirements and processes of DGCCRF food contact material testing for stainless steel tableware exported to France are sorted out, integrating the latest regulations and practice points:

I. Core testing requirements

1. Material composition compliance

- Chromium content: Stainless steel must contain at least 13% chromium (Cr) to ensure corrosion resistance; at the same time, material composition certification (including nickel, manganese, etc.) must be provided.

- Heavy metal migration restrictions:

- Basic items: Dissolution test of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni);

- Expanded items (after 2023): Some products need to add 21 heavy metal migration tests such as cobalt and molybdenum.

- Special coatings: If it contains organic coatings (such as non-stick coatings), additional testing of chemical migration substances such as phthalates is required.

2. Migration test and sensory evaluation

- Migration test:

- Use simulant liquids such as olive oil, 3% acetic acid, 10% alcohol, etc. to test the overall migration amount and the dissolution amount of specific substances;

- Coated products: The coating must be separated from the substrate and tested separately (a French-specific requirement).

- Sensory test: Ensure that the tableware does not change the taste, smell or color of the food.

3. Labeling and packaging specifications

- The label must contain French and English, and clearly mark:

- Material composition, production information;

- Use temperature limit;

- Products with coatings/coatings must be marked with warnings such as "avoid high temperature scratches".

2. Testing process steps

1. Select an accredited laboratory

- Must pass ISO 17025 qualifications and be officially recognized by DGCCRF (such as Dezewei Testing).

2. Preparation for inspection

- Provide product technical documents (material list, process description);

- Split mixed materials: non-metallic parts (such as plastic handles) must be inspected separately.

3. Laboratory testing

- Perform component analysis, migration testing (3 simulated fluids), sensory evaluation and heavy metal dissolution testing.

4. Reporting and certification

- After passing the test, obtain the DGCCRF compliance certificate, and the report must be kept for at least 5 years for future reference.

III. Common risk avoidance

- Misjudgment of coating: France requires that the coating and substrate be tested separately. Failure to separate them will result in invalid data.

- Regulatory dynamics: 21 new heavy metal tests will be added from 2023, and you need to pay regular attention to the DGCCRF official website for updates.

- Mixed material products: Non-metallic parts must be inspected separately to avoid overall failure.

Tips:

- The testing cycle is usually 5-7 working days, and complex products may be extended.
