Sterling silver knives and forks sold in the Chinese market must be tested in accordance with the "GB4806.9-2016 National Food Safety Standard Metal Materials and Products for Food Contact". The specific process is as follows:
I. Preliminary preparation and data submission
1. Confirm the testing requirements
Sterling silver knives and forks are metal products that are in direct contact with food and must meet the requirements of the GB4806.9 standard on heavy metal migration and chemical stability.
2. Select a testing agency
A third-party laboratory with CNAS or CMA qualifications (such as Dezewei) must be selected to ensure that the test report is recognized by the market.
3. Prepare materials
- Product information: name, model, material (such as sterling silver content), manufacturer and importer information;
- Technical documents: product manual, production process flow, raw material composition table;
- Number of samples: According to the requirements of the test project, representative samples (such as about 50 pieces) are generally required.
II. Sample inspection and test items
1. Core test items
- Heavy metal migration: lead (≤0.05mg/kg), cadmium (≤0.02mg/kg), arsenic (≤0.04mg/kg), nickel (≤0.1mg/kg), etc.
- Silver ion migration assessment: the dissolution of silver under acidic or high temperature conditions needs to be tested (according to GB31604.1 simulated food conditions);
- Other tests: potassium permanganate consumption, evaporation residue, decolorization test (if the surface is coated).
2. Additional requirements
- If the knife and fork contain a coating or composite material, an overall safety assessment must be conducted in accordance with GB4806.1;
- If additives (such as anti-tarnish coating) are used, they must comply with GB9685-2016 standards.
III. Test cycle and report issuance
1. Test cycle
It takes about 5-7 working days to test conventional items, and complex items (such as silver ion migration) may be extended to 10 days.
2. Report content
- Sample information, test standards, test methods;
- Test results and conclusions;
- Laboratory qualification certificate and signature.
IV. Compliance labeling and certificate management
1. Labeling requirements
- Products must be labeled "food contact", material (such as "pure silver"), implementation standard (GB4806.9-2016), manufacturer information and usage conditions (such as applicable temperature range).
2. Certificate validity
- The test report is usually valid for 1-2 years, but if the material or process changes, it needs to be retested.
