FDA food contact certification for grinder

Core requirements and procedures for applying for FDA food contact certification for grinders in the US market:

I. Core requirements for FDA food contact certification

1. Scope of application

Parts in the grinder that come into direct contact with food (such as plastic grinding chamber, metal blades, silicone seals, etc.) must comply with FDA food contact material standards.

2. Material classification and standards

- Polymers (plastics): must comply with 21 CFR 177 regulations, such as PP, PC and other materials must pass total migration and n-hexane/xylene migration tests.

- Metals (stainless steel blades): must meet 21 CFR 175 standards and test the migration of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, etc.).

- Silicone/rubber (seals): according to 21 CFR 177.2600, test the ionized water and n-hexane extraction.

3. Testing principles

- Total migration: the total amount of substances released from materials to food in simulated high temperature, acidic/greasy environments, with a limit of ≤0.1mg/in² (for plastics).

- Migration of specific substances: Chemical substances such as phthalates and bisphenol A need to be tested separately and meet the limit.

2. Certification process

1. Material classification and sample delivery

- Separate the various components of the grinder (plastic, metal, silicone, etc.) and provide representative samples separately.

- Example: The plastic grinding chamber needs to provide a standard test piece made of the same batch of raw materials.

2. Laboratory testing

- Choose a third-party laboratory approved by FDA (such as Dezewei) for testing.

- Typical test items:

▪ Plastic: total migration (water/alcohol/oil-based simulated fluid), migration of specific chemicals

▪ Metal: heavy metal dissolution (lead ≤0.1ppm, cadmium ≤0.05ppm)

▪ Silicone: volatile organic compound (VOC) and extraction test.

3. Document preparation

- The laboratory issues a compliance test report, including material composition, test methods and result comparison.

- The manufacturer needs to prepare a "Declaration of Conformity" to declare that the product complies with the relevant chapters of 21 CFR.

4. FDA registration and submission

- Complete company registration (FFRN number) and product listing through the FDA official website.

- Amazon audit requires both test reports and compliance declarations.

III. Key points

1. Material compliance

- Recycled plastics are prohibited, and metal parts must be marked with food grade (such as 304/316 stainless steel).

- Coated parts (such as anti-stick coatings) require additional testing of coating stability.

2. Label requirements

- Products must be marked with "Food Grade" or a knife and fork logo, and the packaging must indicate the applicable temperature range (such as -20℃~120℃).

3. Common problems

- Main reasons for test failure: excessive plastic additives and unqualified metal heavy metal migration.

- Testing cycle: normal 5-7 working days.

IV. Recommended operation steps

1. Confirm the materials of the grinder's food contact parts

2. Disassemble the parts and contact the FDA-approved laboratory

3. Complete classification testing

4. Prepare compliance documents

5. Submit to Amazon and FDA for filing.
