EU REACH testing method for smart watches

Date:2025-06-17 10:48:04 Classification :【question】 Visits:348
REACH is a regulation of the European Union for preventive management of all chemicals entering its market. For electronic products such as smart watches, the specific restrictions of REACH are mainly concentrated in the following aspects:

1. Restriction of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)

- SVHC List: REACH requires strict control of certain Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). These substances may cause serious harm to human health and the environment.

- Notification requirements: If the concentration of SVHC in smart watches exceeds 0.1% (by weight) and the total amount produced or imported per year exceeds 1 ton, the manufacturer or importer must notify the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

- Information transmission: If the concentration of SVHC in smart watches exceeds 0.1%, even if the annual production or import volume is less than 1 ton, the manufacturer or importer must provide safe use information to downstream users and consumers.

2. Control of restricted substances

- Annex XVII: Annex XVII of REACH lists substances that are prohibited or restricted in products sold in the EU market. These substances include, but are not limited to:

- Heavy metals: such as lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.

- Phthalates: such as DEHP, BBP, DBP, etc.

- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): The content of certain PAHs in rubber and plastic products is strictly restricted.

- Organotin compounds: such as tri-substituted organotin compounds, DBT, DOT, etc.

- Asbestos fibers: They must not be intentionally added to any product.

- Nickel and its compounds: The release of nickel is restricted in products that come into contact with the skin.

3. Registration requirements

- Chemical substance registration: For chemical substances with an annual production or import volume of more than 1 ton, manufacturers or importers must submit registrations to ECHA. This includes chemical substances used in smart watches, whether as raw materials, mixtures, or intentionally released substances.

4. Evaluation and authorization

- Evaluation: ECHA will evaluate registered substances to determine their risks to human health and the environment.

- Authorization: For certain high-risk substances, ECHA will require manufacturers or importers to apply for authorization before they can sell or use these substances in the EU market.

5. Testing and compliance

- Testing requirements: Smartwatch manufacturers need to test their products to ensure that they comply with the requirements of the REACH regulation. This includes testing for SVHC and restricted substances.

- Compliance statement: Manufacturers or importers need to provide a compliance statement to prove that their products comply with the requirements of the REACH regulation.

Through the above measures, the REACH regulation ensures that electronic products such as smartwatches will not cause unacceptable risks to human health and the environment when they are sold in the EU market. Manufacturers and importers need to strictly comply with these regulations to ensure product compliance.
